Paid by The Committee To Elect Rolando Cruz
Issues
Over the last few years, we have seen an explosion of high density housing in North Las Vegas. While
there is a necessity to balance housing with affordable dwellings, it is also important to balance this
growth. One of the major steps I am taking is that I will not accept donations from the big developers.
This puts me in a position to curb out-of-control and irresponsible growth. We also need to look at
the way apartments and housing in general are being pushed through both the Planning Commission
and City Council. It is necessary that the Planning Commission require an independent impact study
paid by the developers but chosen by the city. When elected, I will help bring balance and
accountability to City Hall.
Apartment Building Boom
Community Involvement
One of the main things we have to demand from City Hall is more involvement with our community.
When elected to the City Council, my cell phone number will become public knowledge. You should
have access to your elected officials. We all have to be involved in our government. Public apathy is
the sure-fire way to elect officials that are not going to be involved in their community.
Public Safety
To many, our city has an added stigma of high crime. While our brave men and women in uniform do
a fantastic job, we can still do better. When elected, I will push very hard for the mandatory
implementation of C.P.T.E.D. (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). This program is
already in place but only on a voluntary basis. With this tool, we can bring flawed building designs that
make fighting crime harder for us under control. Not only can we reduce crime, but we can also make
fighting crime easier by eliminating easy hideaways. Buildings should have the approval of
C.P.T.E.D. before they go to City Council for final approval.
Government Transparency
I have yet to hear an argument for not having cameras in City Hall. How can our democracy not be
available for the masses to see? When elected, I will push for every City Council hearing to be
available to all. The very least we can do is to broadcast them on the city website, but ultimately it
should be available on local television.
Neighborhood Casinos
For Nevadans, casinos are not only a major source of income with good paying jobs but also provide
entertainment to it's citizens. However, it also brings an element that some neighborhoods may not
want. While I am refusing donations from casinos, I am not against growth in the valley. I am against
irresponsible growth. When elected, I will be an independent voice whose political life is not owed to
casino donations like the rest of City Council. I will be looking out for everybody's best interest.
Schools in North Las Vegas
While it is the responsibility of Clark County to fund our schools, City Hall should ensure that our
students are being taken care of. When elected, I will make sure we implement programs to make the
schools in North Las Vegas the envy of Nevada. The bottom line is that if we don't act now, we will
have to deal with problems down the road in the form of crime and negative productivity. We should
ensure that after school activities are available for at risk students. Education is the foundation for all
of society and pretending it's not is just foolish.
Downtown Redevelopment
We are currently in the middle of a multi-million dollar redevelopment for our downtown. I feel I have
a truly unique experience that will help make it a success. As the general manager of Amigo Auto
Sales, I saw first-hand the economic conditions of the citizens in ward 1. I also have first-hand
knowledge of what it takes to run a business downtown. When elected, I will bring my knowledge
and expertise to the City Council.
