| My Childhood |
| I was born on June 4th, 1972 in the small town of Humacao Puerto Rico. I am the youngest of two kids. My brother, Robin, is eleven years older than me and was born in the same hospital. I had pretty much a normal childhood growing up with a set of parents that not only loved each other but loved me just as much. My dad worked for a cigar company until the early seventies. After being laid-off when the cigar factory moved, my dad decided to go back to school. He majored in English and became a teacher. My mom began having health problems after having me so she quit her job. In 1984, my dad volunteered for the PPD (Partido Popular Democratico or Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico). He served as an election observer and helped supervise the counting process. It was during this time that I became exposed to the political process. I used to walk with my dad every day to the office and we volunteered making signs and polling. In 1986, my dad received a transfer to teach in New York and we all moved in with my uncle. In 1990, I graduated with merits from Clara Barton High School in New York. I went to Hunter College for a year but dropped out after not taking it seriously enough. My dad passed away in May 2003 shortly after being diagnosed with acute leukemia and my mom died in January of 2007 from complications with diabetes. My brother Robin lives in New York. |
